Thrift finds

It's been a couple of weeks of quick stops and being very selective with thrifting. We've been looking mostly at small items so it's easy to move and store.

Here we found two yellow Glasbake soup mugs/bowls, some vintage wooden tree ornaments, and just above the word lemons on the vintage 1978 screen print is the head of an elf. My daughter is giving it new life. The screen print came with a wooden frame.

The cute cat is a bank. It was made in Japan. We found photo corners, vintage Easter cards, a glass sleigh that  is a candle holder, but the vintage stained glass Santa found happiness sitting in his new mode of transportation.

In addition we found a set of six silicone Christmas tree molds that will be used to make holiday lotions or something with beeswax. There was a bright funky two yard piece of fabric, some hand made crochet dresser scarfs and a Christmas print clutch.

Finally we found a couple of cookie cutters, a wooden reindeer ornament, a sweet charity key chain and a white opal Pyrex pie plate. Even though we do not need to bring anything else home we can't stop looking and shopping. Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful week. Keep on thrifting.

Thrift Finds

Having fun, just getting out, running errands, and checking out the sales. Let it be known that we need nothing at this point, but it's so much fun checking out other's "stuff".

These finds include some vintage mushroom kitchen items for the store, a unique solar tea jug that's vintage 1972, this is to replace the one that kept leaking, and the wooden rack is for foil, wax paper, plastic wrap and paper towels. The metal cutter is built in to the wood for cutting. My daughter is packing this for her soon to be home.

We picked the vintage Tupperware divided trays and cups for the store, a vintage set of measuring cups and spoons that are aqua for her vintage kitchen, a Pyrex refrigerator bowl and the sifter was a thrift gift from my daughter's co-worker. They ventured out on a lunch hour and I was thrilled to have a new one that is easy to use and believe me I use my sifters. We also found another Pyrex clear casserole cover for the collection.

She selected three vintage sheets, leaving quite a few behind, that she thought she could work with and the rose Fire King plate she picked up for her sister's collection.

Last for this past week is this wonderful Herb book. Oh my goodness the information that is in it totally amazed me. Everything you need to know is in this book including recipes for soaps, lotions, healing recipes, how to grow them, harvest, preserve, and to tell you the truth I could spend days with this book. We've been quite selective although we should not be out hunting at all, but the urge will never die and the fun will never leave, so we'll keep on going. Thank you for stopping by and visiting and I hope your finds are as fun as ours. Have a wonderful weekend.

Thrift finds and freebie economics.

With an extra day off for the holiday we headed out to get our errands done and did a little thrift shopping. We found a few things that were on our personal list and some items to add to the store.

These darling bottles are vintage Avon product bottles. Some were perfume, some were lotions, and some were bubble bath, but my daughter got them all for $1 and will put them on a shelf with her other people.

Already sold are the two matching vintage cocktail glasses and the multi colored geometric glasses that are Georges Briard. The bar ware is new and stainless steel and my daughter will add them to her vintage collection. She also found a large cocktail glass with recipes on it and a Flintstones Betty glass. She added it to her collection and she now has eight.

A couple of items on our list were the gallon jug for our sun tea and a meat grinder. The jug was $1.99 and the meat grinder was $5 and after I cleaned it up it was in great condition. The vintage nursery lamp was $1. We always pick up Pyrex covers and the measuring cups and spoons are vintage Rubbermaid and she will be adding them to her bee keeping supplies.

The hand held blender we got for $3 and it will make it easy for me to puree those winter soups. We found a package of cast iron owls, an unopened package of classical music and a few more books for our safer home and natural medicine shelf.

We had good luck with fabric and linens. We found a vintage set of pink double size sheets, one flat and one fitted that are new in the package. A vintage garden girl sheet, the bright orange, green and yellow floral table cloth and some cotton print fabrics. I also found a Vogue pattern for two different style Kimonos for $.99.

She found some heavy green cotton duck fabric, a yard of rainbow print stripe fabric and three new summer tops.

She found these three bundles of fabric samples that coordinated. I know there are some bright fun projects that will come from these. All in all the prices were crazy and we think we did exceptionally well. We have been very selective lately, but when you find good stuff you just can't leave it behind.

For freebies this week we got four dozen regular mouth canning lids. These were purchased with the Walmart savings catcher dollars that had added up. We usually let it accumulate to a larger amount, but the lids were needed because I was running low. That's the exciting thrift finds and freebies that we got this week. To some, not special finds, but we really have more than we need at this point and just getting out to look is the best part. Have a great week and thank you for stopping by.

Thursdays Threads

She's been busy sewing up the remnants and scraps into new projects. My daughter has a collection of vintage sheets that some people would die for. She's been collecting for years. We sew everything we can with them and just enjoy looking at the stash some days. It's our therapy.

This is a lovely springtime table runner, quilted and backed with white cotton.

Quilted coasters.

Purses and purse accessories.

Curtains to hide things.

And just recently children's tote bags.

This is just some of the creativity that keeps us sane. Seeing the scraps made into something functional is our motivation.
Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.

Thrift finds

January and February have been busier than usual thrift months. We've been on a quest to find canning jars and when we have we've either purchased them or followed them according to tag colors and sale dates. 50% off is always better. We've been lucky enough that they've been on the shelf still when we go back as much as a week later. That to me is the universe saying they were meant to be ours.

It seems that more have been available in January than in past months and we've wondered if it's because everyone was donating at the end of the year to get taxable donations. These are more that we added to our stash and we've found all sizes. The two aqua Mikasa bowls were an extra because they match my daughter's set she has been building.

Another Saturday stop yielded us four dozen more jars including a brand new case of old stock eight ounce jars with lids. Again it was a nice variety of sizes.

Living in a small townhouse apartment doesn't actually give you a lot of room for storage, but my daughter used a target gift card she received for Christmas and bought a shelf that fit in an empty corner. It was perfect for all the jars, crock pot and some of her collectible Pyrex. She made the curtain from a vintage "thrifted" sheet to match her color scheme for the dining area. She says she has enough to add a border to a table cloth she wants to make. I have a good supply of jars to keep me going for a while and yes, I've already used some.

There were other thrift finds too. Candle making supplies, Wilton silicon molds for her soaps and lotions, books on herbs and aromatherapy, double pointed knitting needles, Popsicle molds, fabric, vintage sheets, Vera scarfs and a vintage roll of whimsical kitchen wall paper.

Books had taken a way back seat for the two of us. We both enjoy reading and we had resorted to using the library because storage space for books was scarce. However we have rekindled our love of owning a few good books and started picking up those we can use or read and move on, but some will stay on the shelves here. My younger daughter took me to a book sale and I came home with only 10 books because I was quite choosy. I also have a difficult time carrying heavy items so I limited my selections. My favorite find has been the American Woman Cook Book from the Culinary Arts Institute that was printed in 1938. Found at Good Will for $3.98, but purchase at 50% off. It is a complete encyclopedia for the time. I am enjoying it so much, but I haven't tried any recipes yet.

This cutie is a hand made ceramic. The painting was so wonderfully done and yes he was a thrift store find. His face just spoke to my daughter and his color pallet matched her decor so home he came and sits lovingly on her shelf. I think this may be the first in a new collection of Gnomes.

I say that because of this. She has a vintage shelf with collected and thrift store Angels and several other thrifted collections around the townhouse. The wooden Angels on the bottom are hanging from the shelf and the sign says "Angels Gather Here". Yes they do and it's so wonderful to have simple "small" collections to brighten up our home.

Thrift Gift of Fabrics

Thrift shopping was put on hold this past week because of one of those events that happen in life, so these are last weeks finds, but Wow! What a time we are having. Got out a bit while the sun was shining and found linens, which are our favorite things to find, along with a few other items.

Just so excited about these curtains and pillow shams. I have already reclaimed the lace and salvaged the pleats on the drapes to up cycle. Envisioning a few projects with the remaining fabric.

This is just a few of the sheets we found. We are so addicted to fabric and sewing.

Imagine the thrill of finding NIP vintage sheets. The trip was getting better every minute.

Then there were napkins, a Vera scarf and an embroidered linen just right for a pocket on my up cycled robe. Got to have a pocket.

My favorite fabric find is the beautiful piece of vintage pink floral fabric. Almost silk like, but so Hollywood. I remember fabric of this kind made into wonderful bed covers. The vintage Vera scarf is a poppy pattern and then there's the lovely bowl with it's cover.  A couple of years ago I found four pear shaped dishes that are part of a Lazy Susan set. They were so nice that I couldn't leave them behind because I felt that some one could use them as serving dishes. Who would have thought that a couple years later I'd find the center bowl that matches them, in a totally different place on earth and in excellent condition. I can't wait to put them together, but now the challenge will be to find the wooden base to put it on. Not impossible. I just need to put it out on the radar and it will come.

I just had to show everyone how beautiful this is. Imaging finding the pieces years and miles apart. Currently listed on butterflyplace.etsy.com.

2014 is off to a great start.

It seems that this first week of 2014 has flown by already. We've been out thrifting once so far because we've been trying to "finish" a few projects that got put on hold because we became ill during the holidays. May have been the flu, but we're getting better. Some of the items we found were different for us.

The first different item was a toy wagon. A small pull toy that may have stored blocks but for $3.99 it has great up cycle potential and you can't even purchase the casters or wood for that price. Then there were two "nalgene" water bottles. To purchase new would be well over $10 each and these were only $1.99 each. I'm constantly loosing my good water bottles, although I do have Cuppow lids, but these were 32 ounce size so they quickly went into the cart. After looking twice at them I realized that one was an emergency preparedness kit and the other was a heat stress kit. Now, I don't know how old these are, but I will open them and check the expiration dates on the items enclosed and dispose of them if needed. I guess the items enclosed was a bonus. Checking on line these kits are not sold so it was probably a promotional item. Bandages can go in my first aid kit easily. Continuing on

we found a NIP Care Bear Cousins twin size sheet set. A fun find was a vintage wooden made in Holland puzzle and then of course two made in Japan coffee mugs. And then there were linens.

Bright orange floral pillow cases, vintage fruit print table clothes and pink and orange floral sheets. These are the fun things because we just love fabric.

The bright yellow sheet set can make any wind chill factor feel better. The pink, white and black fabric are home made cafe curtains with rings and could fancy up any vintage kitchen and who can pass up indoor, outdoor fabric for the right price. Well that's what we found on our first trip of the new year. We were happy. Really can't wait to see what some of the fabric and vintage sheets become. Happy New Year everyone. Stop by the stores and see what's new. I'll be stopping by to visit you too.

Mid week happenings.

What a busy week I am having and this coming weekend is going to be even busier. I have plans to spend a few days on the hunt. We'll probably do a few thrift stores, estate sales and maybe a church sale or two. Spring fever has set in and the need to get out has too.

I found a few new finds that have proven to be good ones. My favorite is a 1920's Pyrex bean pot.

The most whimsical item is a turtle bank made in Japan. He is so cute and I had a hard time listing him on the store.

I found vintage Christmas fabric, African animal napkin rings, Garfield mugs and more Pyrex bowls. There's more, but for now this is what I have ready and I am busy listing them on the stores. Please stop by and visit butterflyplace.etsy.com and butterflyplace.storenvy.com .

Vintage Thrift

This week has been a whirlwind for me. I've been busy getting items listed on two stores, sewing (mending) to add to my living and working with my darling friend to build a web site. I got out to do a couple of small thrift stores, and get my shipping and errands done and get some fresh air and was happy to find good items to resell.

My favorite find his week was this vintage made in Japan stainless steal and wood fondue pot. Now I've seen a lot of fondue pots, but nothing as attractive and wonderful than this. It has a couple of marks on the wood, but this is not finding a new home, it is home. Decided this looks just fine on my daughters vintage hutch with her vintage collection.

My next find was this vintage set of red metal trays with a gold and black Peacock design. I've seen these listed and was not sure that they would sell, but the price was perfect and I decided to give it a try. I had six likes and one comment on this item on my Facebook page so there is hope.

I also found this well loved cast iron trivet. It was made in Japan and had a great geometric design. I haven't seen too many done in yellow and after some cleaning up it became sell able. Some one may want to repaint it, but the fact that it was well used meant that it was loved. I like that in my items. Both of these items are listed on butterflyplace.storenvy.com .

The only other item that I found (bought) was this vintage piece of stretch knit fabric. All I could imagine for it was a fun disco dress. It was well over two yards long and yes, a wow of 56 inches wide. Did we actually have fabric that wide back then? I was not paying attention. Shame on me. This fabric is listed on butterflyplace.etsy.com .

This week I have more mending to do and will be packaging the glass items listed this past week for storage until sold. We'll be continuing with the web site and of course I will continue listing items. I hope everyone has a wonderful week and great luck with your stores.
